  • Your Computer Boot Faster - Windows Registry

Wouldn't it be great if you computer booted up as fast as your TV set turns on? Isn't it frustrating to sit there as you wait and wait? Have a cup of coffee read the newspaper while you waiting on your machine boot up. It would seem that newer operating systems would actually boot quicker than the old ones, but for the most part that does not seem to be the case. Windows 7 does indeed boots up much quicker then Windows Vista.

There are some things you can do to help you computer boot up a little quicker. First thing you can do is eliminate any unnecessary software on your computer. The way you are going to that, if you are using Windows XP, go into the control panel, add remove programs get a list of the applications and look for stuff you have not used for a long time and get it out of there. Some of the software might be actually running as a process in the background and using up memory and CPU cycles. If you are using Windows Vista, go to control panel, programs and features and get the complete list of software. Often new computers come shipped with trail ware (aka) crapware and this can be running as a process in the background. There is a free tool called decrapifier that you can run and find this trial ware and get rid of it.

Second thing you can do to help your computer run faster is on your XP machines go to start menu click on run and type in msconfig. This will bring up a dialog box and there is a tab that says start up. Look for startup applications that you may not normally want to start up. You do want to have your anti-spyware and antivirus software boot up with your computer and running all the time. You may not need your digital camera software running all the time. By using msconfig you can stop those applications by disabling from running, without deleting them.

Check out the BIOS on your computer. BIOS does the memory checks, looks at all the hardware on the system looks at the boot sequence of all the drives. If you have not made any real modification to your ram for example for a long time, and you have the option to do a quick boot or skip memory check you might want to enable those, because that can speed up you boot time as well. Then take the time to look the boot sequence, is it checking the USB drives and optical drives before it goes to the hard disk. Remember you need to know what you are doing or get someone with experience before tinkering with the BIOS.

Windows maintains what is called a registry; Windows Registry is a database more or less of what hardware a system has, software preferences, user's profiles, all that is tracked in the Windows registry. When you uninstall, add, delete software, it leaves bits and pieces behind in the Windows registry and can slows group process. There are some free applications such as cc cleaner and there are paid applications such as system mechanic. You better know what you are doing because it is real easy to hose windows and you could be looking at an expensive fix on your hands.
